The Fight for Your Focus (Proverbs 4:25)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 4:25

Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.

This verse falls into a subsection that I think is beautiful – verses 23-26 – and we’ve already prayed through two of the verses, one of those, verse 26, coming last week.

The reason why I mention that is because this verse has all the more meaning when you see it in light of the whole section. I’ll read it to you starting in verse 23:

Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.

Verse 23, an incredibly popular Proverb, is about the heart. And then the next few verses mention the tongue, the feet, and the eyes. It’s a whole-body call to vigilance. God is saying, “Every part of you matters.”

Verse 24? That’s about the tongue:
“Put away from you crooked speech.”
“...put devious talk far from you.”

Verse 26? That’s about the feet:
“Ponder the path of your feet.”

And right in the middle is our verse today – verse 25 – about the eyes:
“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.”

From the heart, to the tongue, to the feet, to the eyes – God’s saying, “All of it matters.”

Every part of your body is part of your worship.

And that’s important to keep in mind with this verse in particular because where your eyes go, your life follows.

The eyes are powerful. What you fix your gaze on will either pull you toward Jesus or distract you off the path.

And let me tell you, there is a spiritual battle every day for your attention – for your gaze!
The pleasures of sin? They lie on the right hand and on the left. The pressures of the world? Right there too.

Let’s look at Scripture: Remember Lot’s wife? God was rescuing her from judgment. All she had to do was keep her eyes looking forward. But they drifted back. And instead of becoming a monument of mercy – like Lot – she became a pillar of salt.

Look also at Peter. He was walking on water – walking on water! – as long as his eyes were locked on Jesus. But the moment he began to look to the right and the left – to the wind and the waves – what happened? He began to sink.

Distraction is the devil’s ploy.

That’s why God tells us: Look forward. Fix your gaze. Keep your eyes on Jesus.

He is the author and perfecter of our faith. He’s the Son of God, the one who cast out demons, healed every disease, lived a perfect life, and died the death we deserved.

There are plenty of things to look at in this world that will leave you anxious, hopeless, and weighed down – including your own limitations. But Jesus? He’s steady. He’s sure. And He promises that one day, He will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

So let’s keep looking straight ahead. Let’s fix our gaze on Him.

Ask yourself today:

  • What has had your gaze lately? Are your eyes fixed on Jesus – or have they started to wander?

  • What distractions or temptations are pulling you to the right or to the left?

  • What would it look like today to re-fix your eyes on Jesus?

Let’s take a moment now and talk to the One we want to stay focused on. Let’s pray.
