The God Who Sees Everything (Proverbs 5:21)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 5:21

For a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord,
and he ponders all his paths.

This verse comes at the tail end of chapter 5 in Proverbs, which is framed as a warning about the dangers of lust. Narrowly speaking, it’s a reminder that the adulterer wrongly believes he can do his business unnoticed in the dark – but the LORD sees everything. He sees that sin.

But it’s not just lust He sees. He. Sees. Everything.

God sees your every step. Every. Single. One. He sees the public ones, He sees the private ones. He sees your first step out of bed in the morning and your last step back into it at night. All of man’s ways are before the Lord.

I think sometimes we live like there are blind spots in God’s vision – like He has spiritual cataracts. But God doesn’t squint. He doesn’t miss a thing. His vision is perfect.

And what a reminder that is. God sees everything. That’s both terrifying and so encouraging at the same time. It’s a unique feeling.

It’s terrifying because it makes you reflect on the moments where you thought no one else was watching – and you certainly hoped no one was watching – because your actions weren’t exactly what you’d want the world to see. But God saw that.

And that, though absolutely terrifying in one sense, is also so encouraging because that means God has seen you at your lowest moments; He has seen you at your worst. And yet He still loves you. He knows you’re a mess. He knows you can’t figure it out. He knows your best efforts to serve Him are pretty pitiful – and still, He stays. He cares. He loves. His mercy is infinite. What great grace. What a great God.

And this same truth should also encourage the believer who's trying their best.

I feel like multiple times this week I’ve referenced the great commandment to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And let me tell you – if you’ve been doing your best to live that out, God sees that too. He sees you in the secret place praying. He sees you opening your Bible first thing in the morning. He sees the tears, the sacrifice, the effort.

And He loves that. And He rewards that. He draws near to those who draw near to Him.

So be reminded today that God sees everything. And ask yourself:

  • What is He seeing from you?

  • How much different would your life look if you lived knowing God sees everything?

  • And where can you invite Jesus into what He already sees today?

Whether today’s verse hits you with conviction or comfort – either way, it's an invitation to come closer.

Let’s take a moment and bring that to God in prayer.
