What Are Your Words Saying About You? (Proverbs 12:22)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 12:22
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
but those who act faithfully are his delight.
The message of this verse is simple: God delights in the trustworthy.
Lying lips are more than just bad manners. They’re more than an act of self-preservation. They’re the mark of the deceiver. And when we lie, we’re showing more resemblance to the enemy than to our God. You’ll know someone by the fruit of their lips. That’s why this sin isn’t a joke.
But don’t take my word for it. Look at Acts 5. In that chapter, Ananias and Sapphira dropped dead after telling a lie. That’s not just dramatic – it’s divine judgment. Their words exposed a heart that wasn’t loyal to God. Deceit on the lips revealed deception in the heart.
That’s why they were not God’s delight. But, as this verse tells us, “those who act faithfully” are.
Now what does that mean?
Faithfulness is like loyalty with roots – it starts in the heart, but you’ll see the fruit in how someone talks, lives, and loves. Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”
And 2 Chronicles 16:9 says,
“The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”
God is looking – not for perfect people – but for loyal ones. He delights in those who stay faithful in heart and action. That looks like putting Him first, seeking His approval, keeping the main thing the main thing: loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
It’s not about perfection – it’s about devotion. A life that says: I’m not my own anymore.
So ask yourself:
If someone were a fly on the wall for a day – watching, listening, scrolling through your thoughts – what would they say you care about most?
Would they see a heart devoted to truth? Or would they hear words that twist, hide, or cover up?
Even small lies can expose big things.
The mouth is the microphone for the heart.
What are your lips revealing about your heart?
Let’s take a moment to bring all this before the Lord.
