Skill That Stands Before Kings (Proverbs 22:29)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 22:29

Do you see a man skillful in his work?
He will stand before kings;
he will not stand before obscure men.

If there’s ever been a verse that celebrates excellence – this might be the one that takes the cake.

Proverbs 22:29 reminds us: when someone gets good at what they do, it makes a difference. Their skill is seen, their diligence is noticed. In fact, it can take them all the way to the presence of kings.

Jesus echoes this in the parable of the talents – where the faithful servant is commended for multiplying what he was given. “Well done, good and faithful servant,” the master says. Be faithful with little, and you’ll be given more. It’s not about chasing applause – it’s about honoring the One who gave you the gift.

It shouldn't come as any surprise why the believer, above all people, has every reason to work with skill and diligence. Not to idolize work itself or improvement itself – but to honor our King.

As 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

In other words – even your spreadsheets, meal prep, lesson plans, or late-night diaper changes can be done as worship.

But let’s take a closer look at that promise – ‘he will stand before kings’.

We’ve seen this in the world around us, haven’t we? Skill tends to rise. Those who are talented and work on their craft often ascend in worldly matters and pursuits. Their careers grow, their reputation improves, their pockets increase, their status as well. But Proverbs 22:29 isn’t just about climbing the ladder. There’s a deeper reward.

I like how Charles Bridges frames this. He says:

‘When a man “serves the Lord in fervency of spirit” (as Paul writes in Romans 12:11), thriftfully occupying his own talent for the day of reckoning (Luke 19:13); not only the mean man, but the mighty man of the world, will be too low for him. He shall stand before the King of Kings with unspeakable honor, with unclouded acceptance — Jesus will say, “Well done! good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” (Matthew 25:21-23.)’

That’s the real crown right there. What he’s saying is the man who lives skillfully for Jesus won’t just be recognized by men, but welcomed by the King Himself.

That’s skill in service of the King – not just standing before kings, but before the King of Kings. Not just applause from people, but approval from Jesus.

This is about more than just being good at your job or whatever it is you do. It’s about loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength – and letting that love touch everything you do. It’s about living out the Great Commission with urgency and compassion, not just competence.

Because one day, if your work is surrendered to Christ, He will say it again: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

And why will He say that?
Because the work that mattered most – the work you and I could never accomplish – was already finished.

Jesus completed His work – the work – on the cross. That’s the only reason we can stand before any throne at all.

So today, if you feel unseen in your work… or unsure if it matters… take heart.

Skill may open doors. But surrender? Surrender gets you a seat in the throne room.

Let’s reflect:

  • Where in your life are you being invited to grow in skill – not for success, but as worship?

  • Are you more focused on standing before people… or standing before the King of Kings?

Let’s pray.
