Thanksgiving in the Tent: Flourishing with God (Proverbs 14:11)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 14:11

The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.

Happy Thanksgiving! Now, I’m a Thanksgiving man through and through — and an even bigger Christmas man — but I’ll admit, we often sprint toward Christmas lights so fast that we miss the quiet gold of Thanksgiving. We rush past gratitude on our way to garland. But Scripture reminds us that there is much to give thanks for, and some of it is hiding right here in this verse.

The house of the wicked will be destroyed,

but the tent of the upright will flourish.

Do you notice the holy irony? The wicked build houses — big, impressive, weighty things. Foundations poured, walls reinforced, the kind of place that says, “I’m secure. I’ve made it.” And yet God stoops down and says, “Hold up. Wait a minute.” “That’s gonna fall.” Meanwhile, the upright pitch a tent — a little flap of canvas, a few ropes in the dirt — and the Lord says, “That will flourish.”

But here’s the key: Scripture is not pitting houses against tents, or success against simplicity. It’s not romanticizing fragility or condemning stability. It’s exposing a deeper truth — that visible strength isn’t the same thing as real security. A life can look sturdy and still be hollow. And a life can look fragile and still be rooted in something unshakeable.

And it’s also reminding us: the upright don’t flourish because they’re morally superior or spiritually impressive. They flourish because their lives are aligned with the character of God — the One who actually sustains them. They trust Someone steadier than their own achievements.

A house may look safer than a tent; a mansion may seem more reliable than canvas and rope. But without righteousness — without the presence of God — even the strongest structure is a sandcastle before the tide. And with Him, even a tent becomes a fortress.

The wicked trust their walls. The righteous trust their Lord. And that, friends, makes all the difference.

So on this Thanksgiving, let’s give thanks for the One who truly secures us. Whether your life today feels like a mansion or a makeshift tent, give thanks that Christ Himself is your shelter — the One who protects you, provides for you, and holds you fast.

The world measures safety by square footage. Heaven measures it by God’s faithfulness — His, not ours.

And oh, how good He is.

He makes flimsy tents flourish.

He makes small places sacred.

He makes grateful hearts strong.

Let’s pray.
