Unshakeable Strength Starts at the Root (Proverbs 12:3)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 12:3

No one is established by wickedness,
but the root of the righteous will never be moved.

The lesson here: If God is your root, you will never be moved.

Solomon says the ones rooted in God “will never be moved.”

That’s not swagger. That’s not false confidence. That’s Psalm 16 confidence — “because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

In other words: Stability isn’t something you create; it’s Someone you cling to.

One commentator said of this verse:

“Evil is always variable: it has no fixed principle, except the root that is in the human heart; and even that is ever assuming new forms. Nothing is permanent but good goodness; and that is unchangeable, because it comes from God.”

And that old commentator was right: evil shifts and shapeshifts. It never keeps its promises. It always changes the terms after you’ve signed the contract. But goodness — true, God-breathed goodness — is the same yesterday, today, and forever because God Himself is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Which means this: If God is your root, you are not at the mercy of whatever is happening above the soil. Circumstances may whip like wind. Emotions may rise and fall like tides. People may come, go, disappoint, surprise. But a rooted life is a held life.

Maybe that’s why that poet’s line from earlier this week rings so true: “One day this life will soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Everything else is compost. Christ is the Root that never rots.

And if His Word endures forever… if His glory and goodness are eternal… if His presence is the unshakeable center of the universe… then the safest, sanest thing you can do is anchor your entire life to Him.

So let me leave you with a couple questions as we land the plane:

  • What are you trying to root your stability in right now that simply can’t hold your weight?

  • And what would it look like — today, not someday — to sink your roots deeper into Christ instead?

Let’s pray.

Father, plant us deep in You. Uproot every false trust. Make us oaks of righteousness, rooted in the One who cannot be moved. And when the winds rise, let our lives preach this simple truth: Christ is enough. Amen.
