The Treasure That Never Fades (Proverbs 8:19)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 8:19
My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold,
and my yield than choice silver.
Yes — another day, another Proverb that sounds like it’s echoing Psalm 19.
“the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold…”
Proverbs 8:19 here comes from wisdom personified, and she is making it clear that the fruits of following her are much greater than the greatest of material wealth.
But that’s easier said than believed. Gold feels real. Silver feels real. A paycheck feels real. But wisdom? That feels… abstract. It’s intangible. But that’s precisely why God keeps reminding us of this truth.
Money promises security, freedom, and joy — but it never quite delivers. Even billionaires lie awake at night with anxiety. Dan Bilzerian is a great example. He’s a man who has more money than most of us could imagine, yet he admitted: “Nothing I buy brings me lasting happiness.” Even a Ferrari he said only lasted him about 24 hours of joy. That’s the illusion of wealth: it looks solid, but it fades almost instantly.
Wisdom, though — God’s wisdom, embodied in Jesus — gives you what money can’t. It gives stability when life is uncertain. It gives you an identity that isn’t tied to a job title or bank account. It produces a joy that doesn’t evaporate the moment the toy gets old or the vacation ends.
I don’t know many people who would say the one living in a hut in a small town in a third world country is better off than the one with a vacation house and a boat in America. But if the poor man has Christ and the rich does not? Then the poor man is really the rich one. Because he has something death itself can’t take away.
Now that’s not to say that material wealth and wealth in wisdom are exclusive — the Bible isn’t anti-money. But when you put them side by side, there’s no competition. One fades, one lasts forever. One leaves you restless, the other makes you whole.
But are we making that choice?
Knowing most of you live in the US, do you really believe — with your actual life, not just your words — that the fruit of Christ and His wisdom is better than the wealth of the world?
Because for some of us, we get caught in chasing riches through our work and career, and we completely pass on the riches found in Christ. It’s like spending all your time chasing Monopoly money while ignoring the treasure chest sitting in your living room.
Be reminded today that Wisdom isn’t just good advice — it’s a Person.
And if you have Jesus, you already hold the greatest treasure this world could never buy.
The world will always say, “Just a little more will finally be enough.” But Christ says, “I am enough — right now, forever.” That’s the treasure Proverbs is pointing you toward.
Let’s pray.
