The Sweetness That Lasts Forever (Proverbs 24:13-14)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 24:13-14
My son, eat honey, for it is good,
and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
14 Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.
The ending of these verses is reminiscent of Proverbs 23:18, where we’re also encouraged of a future that will not be cut off. And the beginning of these verses is reminiscent of Psalm 19, where it says,
“the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.”
Wisdom, like honey, is good. It’s sweet to the taste and health to the body. In fact, the proverb is saying it’s even better than honey.
Honey can satisfy your tongue for a moment, but wisdom satisfies your soul for a lifetime.
And look at the promise: “If you find this wisdom, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”
Now, if you or I had read that back when it was written, we might have thought: “What kind of wisdom could guarantee me a future that can never be taken away?” It would have felt like a puzzle—sweet, but mysterious. But on this side of history, the mystery has been revealed. Wisdom isn’t just a principle, it’s a Person.
That’s why the New Testament calls Jesus ‘the wisdom of God.’ He is the One who gives not just sweetness for today, but security forever. Honey satisfies for a moment, worldly wisdom may sustain for a season, but Christ—God’s wisdom made flesh—secures joy and hope for eternity.
So when I hear these verses now, I can almost imagine them whispering to us: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Or maybe put it this way: “My son, make Christ your portion, for He is good, and even a glimpse of His glory is sweet to your taste. He is the savior of your soul…if you cling to Him, there will be a future, and your hope in Him will never be cut off.”
That’s what we’re seeing here! The wisdom of God stepped into history, put on flesh, dwelt among us, and in Him our hope will never fail.
So how does that land with you today?
Where are you looking for sweetness—things that satisfy for a moment, but don’t last?
And how can you remind yourself that Christ is your portion—the One sweetness that leads to a hope that never expires?
Take a moment. What would it look like to “taste” Christ today—through prayer, through His Word, through simply stopping to remember His presence with you?
Let’s pray.
