The Heart Behind Words and Work (Proverbs 31:26–27)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 31:26-27

She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.

This week we’ve been reflecting on the importance of work and diligence, and it’s striking that this theme runs all the way to the final chapter of Proverbs. Proverbs 31 is often read only as a portrait of an “ideal woman,” but that’s far too narrow. What we really see here is wisdom made visible — wisdom that speaks with kindness, wisdom that works with care, wisdom that resists idleness.

Though these verses are applied here to a godly woman, the qualities themselves are universal. Any follower of Christ — man or woman, young or old — is called to let kindness shape our words, to live with attentiveness rather than laziness, and to embody wisdom in both speech and action.

And ultimately, this wisdom and kindness come into full focus in Jesus himself. His words always give life. His care over his people never fails.

I’m thankful for that. I’m thankful we serve a God whose kindness is evident not with empty sentiment but with blood bought, death conquering evidence. And that He looks well to His household, those of the family of God by faith. He will never leave you, nor forsake you.

I find this verse to be helpful in reflecting on the inner life.

How’s the heart?

What is flowing from it, both in word and deed?

Let’s take those thoughts to the Lord in prayer.
