What’s Your Honey? Guarding the Heart from Idols (Proverbs 25:16)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 25:16

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,
lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.

Even honey has a limit. Sweetness, when swallowed without restraint, turns sour. That’s Solomon’s warning: even the good gifts of God — when overindulged — can make the soul sick.

This verse is more than a dietary tip. It’s a divine diagnostic. A call to contentment. A checkup for the heart’s hungers.

John Calvin said the human heart is an idol-making factory. And he was right — we turn good things into god things faster than honey melts on the tongue. Our affections are sticky. Our hearts are quick to bow. We don’t just enjoy the gift — we enthrone it.

So what’s your honey?

What delight have you begun to worship?

Is it a person — a spouse, perhaps, or the dream of one?

Is it power? Control? Praise?

What sweet thing has inched too close to the throne of your heart?

The Lord does not begrudge us joy — He gives it! But He will not share His glory with a spoonful of honey.

Every gift must point us to the Giver, not replace Him.

Let’s pray.
