Waging War with Wisdom (Proverbs 20:18)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 20:18
Plans are established by counsel;
by wise guidance wage war.
I’ve been reading a book lately where the author talks about a “wartime mindset.” And the idea behind it is simple but unsettling: you and I are never just coasting through life. Beneath the surface of our days, a real conflict is playing out — truth versus falsehood, faith versus unbelief, the purposes of God versus the forces that quietly pull us from Him.
And that’s exactly the assumption behind this proverb.
“Plans are established by counsel; and by wise guidance you wage war.”
Scripture doesn’t flatter us with the idea that life is neutral ground. It tells us the opposite: life is contested territory. You don’t drift into wisdom. Nobody sleepwalks into faithfulness. If you’re drifting, you’re not arriving — you’re losing ground.
But notice how we wage war. Not with aggression. Not with outrage. Not with white-knuckled striving. We wage war with wisdom. With counsel. With spiritual alertness. With godly voices shaping our steps.
This means the war for your soul isn’t fought with shouting — it’s fought with listening.
It’s not fueled by outrage — but by obedience. God doesn’t expect you to muscle your way through life alone. He’s given you people — trusted, godly people — to help you see clearly, plan wisely, and walk faithfully.
You ever had your plans changed because of input from a friend?
Happens to me more than I’d like to admit. But nowhere is it more obvious than in travel plans. I’ll map out an itinerary, feel good about it — and then someone says, “Hey, you should really stop by here,” or “Actually, that museum’s overrated,” and just like that, the trip’s been rerouted. And you know what? It’s almost always better. I don’t always like it in the moment. But that input, that counsel, has shaped the trip — and shaped me — for the better.
And that’s what the Proverbs are saying. Wise voices don’t just edit your calendar — they guard your soul. They help you in battle.
You and I are in a war. A spiritual war. And it matters big time, and we didn’t choose to be in it, but we do get to choose if we want to play for the winning team or not. And God, in His mercy, hasn’t left us unarmed. He’s given us His Word. He’s given us His people. He’s given us counsel.
But most of all — He’s given us Christ.
Jesus didn’t just offer good advice from a safe distance — He stepped into the battlefield. Our greatest war wasn’t waged with our fists — it was fought by Him. On a hill outside Jerusalem, the Prince of Peace took on sin and death and crushed them with wisdom, not wrath. With sacrifice, not sword.
And now — in Him — you have what you need.
Not to win the war on your own. But to walk in wisdom. To listen. To plan. To lean on others. To follow the voice of your Shepherd.
Today, maybe the counsel you need isn’t another tip — it’s a turn. Maybe it’s time to reroute. To receive wisdom from someone God’s placed in your life. Or simply to return to the only One who’s already won the war.
Let’s listen to His voice. Let’s walk in His wisdom.
And let’s wage our battles — in the Spirit, with Scripture, and side by side.
Let’s pray.
