Our Plans and God's Purpose (Proverbs 19:21)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
This verse just builds on everything we’ve been talking about this week – we’ve been living in this tension and looking at the relationship between our plans and God’s purpose.
And this verse? I feel like it comes in with a mic drop.
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”
Boom. We could stop there. But we won’t.
We plan, we dream, we map things out in our heads – like we’ve got a whiteboard full of arrows and bullet points. But at the end of the day, the only thing that truly stands firm is what God has purposed.
We’ve seen this week that God directs our steps without steamrolling our freedom. That our plans matter – but they don’t override His will.
The fact of the matter is, God’s purpose will be accomplished. And you know what? I’ve experienced this firsthand – sometimes that stings. It’s a different type of sting when you make a plan, you give it your all, and then – bam – it doesn’t happen.
The door slams. The phone call doesn’t come. The timing goes sideways. That sting is even worse when you feel like your plans were what God was leading you toward, only to face the realization that they must not be.
But the truth is, that moment wasn’t punishment. It was protection. It’s grace. The Bible says His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. And His will? It’s always better – even when it’s harder or doesn’t seem to make sense.
That’s not a bumper sticker thought right there. That’s real life.
So what do we do with this verse? We pray. We ask the Lord to align our plans with His purpose. Why? Because this verse tells us His purpose is the only one that will stand.
Man, no one wants to spend years building a sandcastle when God’s inviting us into a kingdom.
And that imagery there always seems to be the difference between my plans and His purpose. And of course I’d take a kingdom over a sandcastle any day.
‘Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.’
There’s a verse in Psalm 37 – it’s verse four – and it says:
‘Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart’.
That means as you delight in God, seeking Him first and foremost, seeking to love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, He changes your heart so that your desires align with His. It doesn’t mean God becomes a vending machine for your wish list. It means as we delight in Him, He shapes our hearts so that we want what He wants. Our desires start syncing with His design, so that our plans align with His purpose.
So let’s pray for that today. That our plans – the many plans that we make – would align with His purpose for our lives. And may He guide and transform our hearts so that we would make plans that align with His will and His ways, with the ultimate goal of bringing Him glory.
