A Gift You Can’t Manufacture (Proverbs 19:14)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 19:14

House and wealth are inherited from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

Alright. Look, let me just call a spade a spade.

Let me be honest: as an unmarried man, this verse is a bit humbling to teach. But perhaps that’s why it’s so helpful — it forces me to see what the Proverb is actually contrasting.

Houses, wealth, inheritances — those are things you can get through the normal machinery of life. They can be passed down, achieved, accumulated.

But a wise and life-giving relationship? That’s not something you can manufacture. You can’t strategize your way into it. Proverbs says that kind of partner is a gift — an act of grace.

Let that simmer and settle.

Now… if that’s true of human relationships, how much more of the relationship our hearts were ultimately made for?

Isaiah 62:5 says

“For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.”

That’s a beautiful verse. If Proverbs is telling us that even the best human relationships are gifts we can’t engineer, Isaiah takes it one step further.

He’s saying the deepest and most life-giving relationship of all isn’t one we pursue — it’s One who pursues us.

‘As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.’

Think about that. The God who needs nothing looks at people like us, with all our inconsistencies and compromises — our yuckiness — and He doesn’t merely tolerate us… He delights in us. He rejoices. And unlike every human relationship, His love doesn’t rise and fall with our performance. It’s a gift, pure and simple.

If you’ve ever longed for a love you couldn’t manufacture, a love that feels like grace… this is what your heart has been homesick for. Jesus Christ.

Let’s pray now.
