Are You Teachable? Part Two (Proverbs 15:5)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 15:5
A fool despises his father's instruction,
but whoever heeds reproof is prudent.
“Are you teachable?” Part Two.
Today’s verse, Proverbs 15:5, although phrased differently, really offers similar truths to Proverbs 10:17. Yesterday it was inferred, today it is known, that “whoever heeds reproof,” “whoever heeds instruction” – that person is “prudent.” They are wise.
I wouldn’t say that’s a groundbreaking truth that will leave you in shock and awe, but it must be noted.
The wise are the ones who listen. They are teachable.
But what about you?
I’ll be honest – I can be pretty stubborn. There have been plenty of times where I haven’t been teachable, and maybe this is the moment where I need my Mom to come in and drop some testimonials, because she’s had to deal with my immaturity the most, HAHAHA.
But I know every time I look back, and even now, I realize that stubbornness didn’t and does not make me strong – it made and makes me foolish. I think I’ve come to learn that some of the wisest people are the ones who truly believe they don’t have all the answers, and so they are constantly seeking to grow, listen, and learn.
“A fool despises his father's instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent.”
May we not despise our Heavenly Father’s teaching and instruction. May we not reject His Word. Instead, may we heed it, listen to it, and learn from it.
In fact, I’m reminded of the Psalmist in Psalm 119:97, who says, “Oh how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.”
The Psalmist there doesn’t just tolerate God’s instruction – he loves it. He desires it. That’s the kind of heart I want. Not just to accept correction, but to actually seek it, knowing it leads me closer to Him.
So, let me ask you:
Is there an area in your life where you’ve resisted and despised the Lord’s instruction? And how can you open your heart to that today?
Let’s pray.
