The Power of a Truthful Witness (Proverbs 14:25)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 14:25
A truthful witness saves lives,
but one who breathes out lies is deceitful.
Don’t underestimate the power of testimony. Testimony is powerful. This verse makes that clear. In a week where we’ve studied the destructive power of gossip, let’s not overlook this morning the saving, restorative power of testimony.
‘A truthful witness saves lives’.
The second half of the verse gives the notion that the witnessing being done here is with your words, and not so much with your life (although your life certainly preaches). It’s encouraging to me, and I hope to all of you, that the Lord can and will use your truthful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Word of God to save lives.
I want that to sink in. Think about that.
God can use your words, your witness, your testimony – to change someone’s eternity.
I’m reminded of the woman at the well in John 4, who, an outcast by societal standards, went and shared her testimony with everyone who would listen after Jesus changed her life.
And guess what? John 4:39 says ‘Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony…’
‘A truthful witness saves lives’. Don’t underestimate the power of testimony.
But just as testimony brings life, lies bring destruction. That’s why the second half of the verse warns us about the deceiver. One who ‘breathes out lies’. That sounds a lot like our enemy, the one Jesus describes in John 8:44 as the ‘father of lies’. In the most eternal sense, there’s a battle for every soul, and the truthful witness, the Lord, and the deceiver, the enemy, are battling for it.
A verse like this leads me to pray over the souls of all people. To pray for eternity. And also to pray for opportunities to be a truthful witness for the Lord. And so before we pray, I’ll ask you:
Who is someone on your heart that you could share your testimony with?
Think of whoever that person is, and let’s pray for them, for opportunities to share, and everything else in connection with this verse.
