Wisdom That Gives Eternal Life (Proverbs 9:11)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 9:11
For by me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
If you remember back to January 1st—the very first devotional—we began in Proverbs 24:11–12: “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.” We began with the gospel. We began with the lost. We began with the call—the Great Commission—that the Lord Jesus has given every one of us: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.
And that’s where I want to close.
“For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.”
Now it’s easy to hear that verse in small terms—as though God were promising a slightly longer, slightly healthier life. As though wisdom were offering a spiritual life hack: live well, obey God, and maybe you’ll squeeze a few more years out of the clock.
But wisdom here is not offering a better retirement plan.
Wisdom is offering life itself.
Because in this passage, wisdom is speaking as a person. Not merely principles. Not abstract ideas. Wisdom is personified. And by now, we should recognize who that is. Wisdom ultimately points us to Jesus Christ—the Word of God made flesh.
So when wisdom says, “By me your days will be multiplied,” this is not a promise that time will slow down. It is a promise that death will no longer have the final word.
By Him, your days are multiplied—not because the clock keeps ticking, but because the grave has been conquered.
That’s why we cannot read this verse with nearsighted eyes. Your life is not ultimately about this life. You are an eternal being, and you will spend eternity somewhere—for better or for worse.
The gospel does not say, “Follow Jesus and you’ll live longer.”
The gospel says, “Follow Jesus and you’ll live forever.”
Not because you were wise enough.
Not because you were disciplined enough.
Not because you were spiritual enough.
But because Jesus Christ shed His blood on a cross, bore our sin, rose bodily from the grave, and now offers His life to anyone who will receive Him by faith.
“By me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.”
Why? Because by Christ—by His cross, by His resurrection—you will be with Him for eternity.
As we head into 2026, the world will tell us: New year. New goals. New you. Reinvent yourself. Redefine yourself.
And listen—new goals aren’t bad. Growth isn’t bad. But hear this clearly:
We do not need a new Savior.
We do not need a new gospel.
It is the same God.
The same Jesus—who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
And my prayer for each of you listening is that 2026 would be marked by a vigorous pursuit of Christ—and an even deeper awareness of His relentless pursuit of you.
Long before you ever sought Him, He was already seeking you.
Long before you ever loved Him, He loved you.
And if you are hearing this today, grace is still being offered.
So I have to ask you—where do you stand with God today?
Not where you stood once.
Not where you hope to stand someday.
But right now.
Have you received this life?
Have you trusted this Christ?
Or are you still living on borrowed time?
Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.
Let’s pray.
