Will You Listen to What Is Good? (Proverbs 8:6)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 8:6

Hear, for I will speak noble things,
and from my lips will come what is right,

This verse feels to me like a cry I hear again and again—through the Spirit within me and through the Lord speaking in His Word. Hear. Listen. Pay attention.

And underneath that call, I sense a question being posed to us: Will you listen?

Not, can you hear—but will you?

The plea is repeated almost insistently: Hear, hear, hear. And God gives us His reasoning. “I will speak noble things. From my lips will come what is right.” These are not words meant to diminish us. They are not words that drain life from us. The Word gives life. It brings life.

And yet, isn’t it striking how bent our hearts are toward listening to voices that take life from us rather than give it to us? We so easily attend to words that promise satisfaction but leave us emptier, words that feel urgent but are not wise, words that shape us quietly in ways we never intended.

The issue, then, isn’t whether we are listening. We always are. The real question is: to whom?

So this Sunday, I find myself encouraged to pray a very simple prayer—not for new insight, but for a changed posture of heart:

Lord, help me to hear. Help me to listen. Help me trust that what You say is not only true, but good.

Let’s pray that together.
