Wisdom Before the World—and Your Story (Proverbs 8:22–23)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 8:22-23

“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of old.
23 Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

When Proverbs 8 tells us that Wisdom was there ‘before the beginning of the earth,’ it’s doing more than giving us a poetic timeline. It’s saying that at the core of reality is not chaos but divine intention — a Wisdom that precedes everything we fear, everything that surprises us, everything that feels out of control.

And when John opens his Gospel by saying, ‘In the beginning was the Word,’ he’s telling us that this Wisdom isn’t an abstract principle but a Person — Jesus Christ.

Why is that important? Because to know that Christ was there before it all means you don’t have to interpret your life through the lens of randomness. The One who began creation is the One who begins His good work in you. And the same Wisdom that shaped the world is faithfully shaping your story, even in the chapters you don’t yet understand.

And so maybe the invitation today is simply this:

to bring the parts of your life that feel most chaotic, most unfinished, most confusing … back under the gaze of the One who has always been there.

If Christ is the Wisdom who stood before the foundations of the world, then He stands before the foundations of your fears too. He is not surprised by what surprised you. He is not disoriented by what disorients you. And He doesn’t wait for your story to make sense before He commits Himself to you.

The earliest pages of Scripture tell us that Christ was there “in the beginning.”

The gospel tells us He is here in this moment.

And the promise of Philippians tells us He will be there at the end, completing the good work He has started.

Your life is not adrift.

It is being shaped — patiently, wisely, lovingly — by the same Christ through whom all things were made.

Let’s pray.
