Nothing Compares to Christ (Proverbs 8:10-11)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 8:10-11

Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

Wisdom over wealth. That’s what these verses tell us. They restate a similar sentiment from Proverbs 3:13-18, which we saw last week, reminding us that ‘all that (we) may desire cannot compare with (wisdom)’.

This indeed is a needed reminder for us today, and we really should remind ourselves of it every day.

Absolutely nothing compares to Christ. Nothing.

He is the prize, the One worth seeking, the One worthy of all glory and honor and praise.

You could have all the riches of this world – the comfortable lifestyle, the big houses, the fancy car, the high-paying job – but without wisdom, you’ll lead a miserable life.

It’s easy to agree with that in theory. Harder to live it. Why? ‘Because man looks on the outward appearance’.

We look at what’s visible on the surface. We are drawn to the big house and the fancy car because we can see those things, and they look pleasing to the eye. We tend to chase what we can see. But all the while, we miss the most pleasing thing for our eyes and lives, which is Wisdom. We miss the Wisdom of God, the person of Jesus Christ, the Spirit of God, because we cannot see Him.

Sure, Jesus can’t be parked in a driveway, but He’s better than any car. And sure, He doesn’t come with a deed, but He’s the only home that lasts for all time.

And just because He cannot be seen does not mean He is not alive and well. It’s verses like these that remind us of our frailty in that and our need to be reminded that Christ is greater. He is greater than all, and nothing we desire can compare with Him.

So maybe today, just pause.

What’s your heart chasing that can’t compare to Christ?

Let’s pray.
