What Voices Are Shaping You? (Proverbs 4:20-22)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 4:20-22

My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their flesh.

Proverbs 4 here gives us this intimate scene: a father leaning toward his son, saying, “Pay attention… don’t let these words drift past you… hold them close.”

And of course, Solomon isn’t only speaking as a parent. Through these words, God himself is addressing us as sons and daughters. The Father is saying, in effect, “Don’t just hear me—receive me. Let my words shape the deepest parts of you.”

Why the urgency? Because God’s words are not mere advice or moral slogans. Scripture says they are “life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.”

In other words, when God speaks, He’s not trying to control you—He’s trying to restore you.

His words carry vitality, clarity, sanity, and even a kind of spiritual medicine for the parts of us that are tired, fractured, or confused.

And that naturally leads to a very modern, very human question:

  • Whose voice is shaping you?

Because we’re always listening to someone—our fears, our ambitions, our timelines, our culture’s expectations, or maybe the quiet inner critic that never seems satisfied. Proverbs invites us to consider that the most life-giving voice might not be our own, but God’s.

Let’s pray in light of this today.
