When Your Grip Slips, His Doesn’t (Proverbs 4:13)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 4:13

Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
guard her, for she is your life.

In Proverbs 4, Solomon is laying out what one commentator calls the “doctrine of two paths” – as in there’s the wise and righteous path that leads to life, and a foolish, wicked path that leads to death.

And the verse we read this morning is showing us that wisdom isn’t just the path or source of life, but that wisdom is life itself.

No wonder we’re encouraged to keep hold and never let go. You would do the same if you knew your life was on the line.

But now that you do, why don’t you? Why do we so easily let go?

This awakens an urgency in me — not just to seek wisdom in practice, but to cling to Christ. That old hymn says it so well: “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.”

Proverbs 4:13 here says wisdom is your life — but Jesus claims to be that wisdom, that life. The gospel isn’t that God gives advice for living; it’s that He gives Himself. To cling to instruction in Proverbs is, ultimately, to cling to Christ.

And the beautiful irony of grace is that even when your grip slips, His doesn’t.

The Christian life isn’t about never letting go, but realizing He never does.

Friend, this is a life-or-death scenario — but not as a scare tactic. It’s an invitation to live. Think about it: most of us never skip meals, ALL of us never forget to drink water, never stop breathing. We instinctively nourish the body because we know what happens if we don’t.

It’s the same with Jesus. We need Him every second of every day — more than breath itself. Crazy, right? But true. He is the wisdom, the life, the sustaining presence that keeps us alive.

So reflect on your dependence on Christ.

  • Have you kept hold of Him?

  • Do you cling to Him as if your very life depends on it?

Let’s pray.
