Voices for the Voiceless (Proverbs 31:8–9)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 31:8-9

Open your mouth for the mute,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy.

A few weeks ago, we prayed through the verses that came before — warnings about the seductions of pleasure and influence: women and wine. And right after those warnings comes this call — as if wisdom herself were asking every leader, “Now that you have influence — what will you do with it?”

One commentator put it well:

“Being a leader means some level of position and power. Will you use it to indulge yourself, or to protect and benefit those you lead?”

That’s the heart of Proverbs 31. Leadership is influence, and everyone has some measure of it — a voice that others hear, a sphere that others feel. The righteous do not hoard that strength for self, but for others.

They spend their power on the powerless.

Job understood this. He said, “I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.”

This is the prayer I want us to lift today — that we would be that kind of people: eyes to the blind, feet to the lame, voices for the voiceless. That our mouths would open not in complaint or pride, but in defense of the weak.

At the end of the day, this is what Jesus did. The One with all authority used His voice to call the outcast home, His hands to lift the fallen, His life to save the helpless.

May we follow in His steps. Let’s pray.
