Be Small in the Right Ways (Proverbs 30:24–28)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 30:24-28

Four things on earth are small,
but they are exceedingly wise:
25 the ants are a people not strong,
yet they provide their food in the summer;
26 the rock badgers are a people not mighty,
yet they make their homes in the cliffs;
27 the locusts have no king,
yet all of them march in rank;
28 the lizard you can take in your hands,
yet it is in kings' palaces.

Four small teachers. One big lesson: be small in the right ways.

Plan — the Ants.

Ants aren’t strong, but they’re season-wise—they store in summer for winter. Most of us live like the sun will never set—financially, emotionally, spiritually. Wisdom says, use the season you’re in: sow when it’s time, reap when it’s time, rest when it’s time. Small doesn’t mean passive; it means prepared.

Perch — the Rock Badgers.

Badgers survive not by muscle but by where they live—high in the cliffs. You don’t win life by getting tougher; you choose a better refuge. Jesus called it building on the Rock. We’re not tanks; we’re phones hunting the strongest signal. Find the Rock.

Parade — the Locusts.

No visible king, yet they move in ranks. Our world worships the solo act, but coordinated smallness can level fields. The church is designed like that: many parts, one Body, animated by an unseen King. Your little line in the formation matters.

Palace — the Lizard.

It’s small, unimpressive— yet it can find its way into kings’ palaces. Quiet faithfulness plus the right skillset can carry you places you never expected. Use your grace-given gifts; doors will open you could never kick down.

And all of these little things point to Jesus.

Plan: Jesus moved with perfect timing—“my hour has not yet come”…until it did.

Perch: Jesus is the Rock. You don’t have to act tougher or be your own savior; you can be honest and secure in Him.

Parade: Jesus is the unseen King who orders His people by the Spirit. Life with Him isn’t a solo mission, it’s a beautiful relationship that extends into the church, His bride, the body.

Palace: He started in a manger and now reigns at the right hand of God. With Jesus, the path of smallness is the path to glory. In Him, your limits become leverage.

So be small in the right ways—timed like the ant, sheltered like the badger, coordinated like the locust, and quietly present like the lizard—because Jesus makes smallness powerful.

Before we pray, where do you need to get small today—planning wiser, perching nearer, parading with others, or patiently showing up with your quiet gift?

Let’s pray.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Wisdom of God, teach me holy smallness.

Make me season-wise like the ant, refuge-sure like the badger, Spirit-led with your people like the locust, and quietly faithful like the lizard.

Be my Rock, my King, my rhythm, and my home. Amen.
