The Shadow of Honor (Proverbs 29:23)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 29:23
One's pride will bring him low,
but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
Different day, different chapter, different verse – yet they all emphasize this same theme of pride and humility. You could call it the upside-down Kingdom logic: Pride lowers; humility lifts.
The world says, “Climb to the top.” God says, “Lay yourself down.”
This verse is also another reminder that humility isn’t optional. It’s inevitable. You can either humble yourself or God will humble you.
There is coming a day, as we read in Philippians 2:10-11, when “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Every knee. Yours. Mine. Everyone’s – will bow before the Lord.
Every tongue. Yours. Mine. Everyone’s – will confess that He is Lord.
The question is – will you kneel now by choice… or later by force? Will you confess freely now by faith, or will your confession come once it’s too late and you are confronted with the fullness of His wrath?
“One’s pride will bring him low,
but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”
It’s a warning and a promise, all in one verse. Pride brings you down. Like we’ve seen, it destroys. Humility brings you close.
To me, this verse echoes James’ words in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5, where we’re told that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”.
And that word “oppose”? It’s not passive. It’s battle language. God goes to war against the proud. And gives grace – His strength, His nearness, His favor – to the ones who come low.
It’s no wonder the proud are brought low, no wonder they fall and are destroyed… God opposes them. He battles against them. That’s not a fight anyone can win. And no wonder those who lower themselves in humility – the lowly in spirit – are honored by God and given grace. They’re close to the One who lifts people up.
But here’s something important, something that came to mind as we were praying yesterday – honor isn’t the goal. God is.
Honor is like a shadow: If you pursue it, it runs from you. But if you flee from it… it follows you.
We don’t humble ourselves to be honored. That’s not the pursuit. We humble ourselves because God is worthy. We want God for God. Not for anything else. It just so happens that when we seek God for God, the honor follows.
So today, is there a “shadow” you’ve been chasing instead of just seeking His face?
Let’s willingly bring ourselves low today, again asking that God would make us humble seekers of His face. May He have His rightful place in our hearts.
