The Giver and the Gift (Proverbs 2:6)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 2:6

For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

One of the reasons I love Christmas is the joy of giving and receiving gifts. But here’s the thing: the gifts themselves aren’t usually what move me most – it’s the thought behind them. One year my sister gave me a book of Psalms. I wasn’t dazzled by the book itself, but what struck me was this: she remembered I’d been drawn to praying the Psalms. She went out of her way, did the research, and found something she thought would nourish my soul. And she’s not even a Christian (yet). That made it even more precious.

Proverbs 2:6 here says wisdom – real wisdom – is a gift. Not earned, not achieved, but given. And the Giver is God himself. Just like that gift from my sister pointed beyond the object to her love and thoughtfulness, the wisdom we receive from God points to the One who knows us, loves us, and desires our good.

And the awesome thing is that in the New Testament we’re told that God’s wisdom isn’t just a concept or a principle – it’s a person. 1 Corinthians 1:24 calls Jesus “the wisdom of God.” He’s not just handing out heavenly advice like fortune cookies – He is the gift. Wisdom, wrapped in skin and born in a manger.

So when you ask God for wisdom, you’re not just asking for clarity – you’re asking for Christ.

To receive wisdom is to know Him. And through His Spirit, we’re continually guided, shaped, and renewed – not by our own brilliance, but by His grace.

So as you reflect on the wisdom you’ve received – moments of clarity, truth, or conviction – ask: am I just grateful for the gift, or am I marveling at the Giver?

Let’s give thanks to the Giver of all gifts today.
