Faithful Messengers Bring True Refreshment (Proverbs 25:13)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 25:13
Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest
is a faithful messenger to those who send him;
he refreshes the soul of his masters.
You know yesterday was a fun day. Start of football season, a very classic but always amazing Saturday full of burgers, the pool, and, of course, football. Now there’s one thing that I guess is becoming a must-have for me on a special occasion and day like yesterday, and that is a good ol’ southern made Cheerwine. I love em.
It’s hard to find something that beats a cold Cheerwine while grilling burgers overlooking your friends hanging in the pool. That was as refreshing as it gets. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing in this verse.
One commentator says “This speaks of a cold drink, cooled by the cold of snow, given to a hardworking man in time of harvest. The refreshing, invigorating nature of that cold drink illustrates the blessing of a faithful messenger to those who send him.”
But notice: the proverb doesn’t say a happy-go-lucky messenger; it says a faithful one. And it doesn’t even focus on the people receiving the message — it says the messenger refreshes the one who sent him. That’s the key. Faithfulness means you carry the message exactly as it truly is, whether it’s fun or not. The joy isn’t guaranteed for the hearer, but the Sender delights when the message is delivered with integrity.
Think about it. A friend who calls you out when you’re headed for a cliff in your walk with God — that’s not negativity, that’s love. Or the doctor who names the diagnosis clearly and then walks with you into treatment. That conversation may not make you jump for joy, but it gives you something better: clarity, agency, and hope grounded in reality. That’s refreshment.
So yes, a cold Cheerwine by the grill is a delight. But on a 100-degree day with the heat of life turned all the way up, what saves you isn’t sweetness; it’s cold, clean water. In the same way, a faithful messenger might bring news that isn’t exciting, but it’s real, and it gives you a way forward.
So here’s our encouragement in the verse: a faithful messenger refreshes the one who sent him.
That’s where this proverb lands. The master isn’t looking for spin, or charisma, or applause. He’s looking for faithfulness. And when the message is carried truthfully, the master rejoices.
And how can that not make you think of the gospel? Jesus Himself is the faithful Messenger — and the message. He told us the hard truth: “repent.” His life, death, and resurrection are the good news — that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. He was faithful all the way to the cross, and because of that, the Father delighted in Him and raised Him in glory.
Now God calls us to follow in His footsteps. He doesn’t ask us to be flashy. He doesn’t ask us to guarantee the crowd’s reaction. He asks us to be faithful. And when we are, when we carry His gospel with courage, clarity, and compassion, the One who sent us is pleased. That’s our joy: not just to bring refreshment to others, but to know that our faithfulness refreshes the very heart of God.
So as we reflect on this verse in prayer, especially after what we prayed through yesterday, let’s ask the Lord to help us care less about the applause and opinion of others, and more about pleasing Him who sent me. And also for opportunities to refresh others with the good news of Christ.
Let’s pray.
