Small Strength, Big Savior (Proverbs 24:10)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 24:10
If you faint in the day of adversity,
your strength is small.
The day of adversity comes to everyone. Whether you are the godliest person on the planet or the most wicked – it doesn’t matter – we all will experience our own adversity, and that is a test to see whether or not we will faint.
‘If you faint in the day of adversity,
your strength is small.’
It’s important to note here that the day of adversity isn’t itself what makes our strength small; this verse isn’t saying that. It’s saying the day of adversity reveals how strong or weak you are. Adversity is like a spotlight – it doesn’t cause the weakness, it just exposes it. It’s like pressure on a pipe: if there’s a crack, it’ll burst. POOF!
Now, spoiler alert – I hate to burst your bubble, but you’re weak. I’m weak. We’re all weak. If adversity hasn’t revealed that about you yet, it will. Maybe it’ll come in the form of rejection, a cancer diagnosis, a divorce. And even worse than that is a life lived with little to no adversity, because you never realize just how weak you are, or, consequently, just how strong God is.
This verse should encourage every Christian because we have every reason to believe we won’t faint in the day of adversity, not because our strength is great – no, it’s small – but because God’s strength is great.
He wants us to call on Him in the day of trouble, and He promises to deliver us (Psalm 50:15). He is a ‘strength and refuge, a very present help in trouble’. This is the God who says ‘He will never leave nor forsake you’ (Hebrews 13:5, Deuteronomy 31:6).
Without a shadow of a doubt, adversity can sweep away the greatest of earthly comforts, and maybe you’ve experienced that. But it can never, EVER, ‘separate us from the love of God’ (Romans 8:39).
Now, with that, let’s pray that when adversity hits, or if it’s hitting you right now, it would reveal God’s strength in our weakness. That we lean on His staff and not our own, because, at the end of the day, our strength might be small – but that’s never been the point.
You were never meant to do this alone. You don’t need great strength. You need a great Savior.
Let’s pray to Him today.
