The Love Behind the Rod (Proverbs 23:13–14)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 23:13-14
Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
14 If you strike him with the rod,
you will save his soul from Sheol.
If you follow this series every morning, you might feel the tension I do right now. “Man, here we go again. Another day, another Proverb talking about disciplining your kids.”
But there’s great value here. I say it all the time and I will say it again: when Scripture repeats itself twice, it would do us well to heed its advice.
And in this case, this is the third or fourth verse on disciplining your kids.
But notice the difference in this passage: Solomon doesn’t just tell us to discipline our children; he tells us why. “You will save his soul from Sheol.” In other words, discipline is not destruction—it’s deliverance. Loving correction can steer a soul away from ruin.
But let’s dive even deeper. Discipline itself points us to the heart of the gospel. The Bible says, “The Lord disciplines those He loves.” (Hebrews 12:6) Our heavenly Father corrects us not to condemn us, but to save us. And the ultimate picture of that love is at the cross—where God did not withhold discipline from His own Son, but allowed Jesus to bear the punishment for our sin, so that we might be forgiven.
Friend, think of that.
The rod of divine justice fell on Jesus—so it would never have to fall on you.
That’s love beyond measure. That’s grace that saves.
So today, instead of sighing over “another proverb about discipline,” let your heart be thankful. Thankful for a Savior who took the discipline you and I deserved. Thankful for a Father who loves us enough to correct us and lead us toward life.
Here’s a question for you all today:
Have you thanked God for the cross?
Have you thanked the Lord for Jesus?
Let’s do just that this morning. Let’s pray.
Father, thank You for loving us enough to correct us. Thank You for Jesus, who bore the punishment for our sin. Help us to walk in gratitude, humility, and obedience to You today. In His name we pray, amen.
