The Root of Every Sin (Proverbs 21:4)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 21:4

Haughty eyes and a proud heart,
the lamp of the wicked, are sin.

This verse gives us a picture of how sin runs through us like a tree. Our heart – the root – feeds everything. Our eyes – the branches – stretch out and take in the world. And what comes from it? The fruit – the lamp that reveals what’s inside of us. And the problem? That whole tree is poisoned by pride.

There is evil in the root, evil in the branch, and evil in the fruit. We are full of sin ourselves, and so what we do is sinful.

I love how the Lord, through the book of Proverbs, provides stamp upon stamp on the abomination of pride. I feel like this issue and sin is repeated often in Proverbs, and when something is repeated in Scripture, it’s likely what? It’s likely pretty important.

Pride isn’t just one sin among many. It’s the root system that feeds all the others.

If we don’t kill it at the root, it will grow and take over. It’s dangerous.

So let’s treat it the same way God does. Our hearts – who we are – our eyes – what we see – and our lamp – the light we shine and the things we do – are so important. They are to be kept and guarded with all vigilance, because the danger of pride looms large.

  • So where have you seen pride creeping into your heart lately?

  • If your life is a tree, what kind of fruit is it producing?

Let’s pray today, asking the Lord to create in us humble hearts, and to produce the fruit of righteousness and not sin.

Pride corrupts everything.

God, our hearts are full of pride, but you give grace to the humble. Make us like Jesus – who had every reason to boast but chose humility instead. Change our hearts, change our vision, and let our lives shine with your light, not our own.
