God’s Plans Aren’t a Group Project (Proverbs 21:30)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 21:30

No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel
can avail against the Lord.

The threefold repetition here serves its purpose in reminding you and me that every strain of human brilliance, when stood beside the Lord, falls flat like a note sung off-key. There is a vast and uncrossable chasm between the best of man’s insight and the boundless sovereignty of God.

I believe Solomon’s aim in this verse is to turn our gaze – not to what we know – but back to Who we know. It’s dangerously easy to stake our decisions, and even more so our confidence, on our knowledge. And yes, there’s a place for wisdom – but to make that your security, your “go-to” in the clutch, is like trusting a paper boat to cross a storming sea.

What we know must bow before Who we know.

Knowledge alone is a brittle crutch; but to lean on the Lord is to stand firm in a world spinning with uncertainty. We would do well to let every fact, feeling, and forecast be filtered through the face of Christ – to remind our hearts, again and again, that confidence rooted in Him cannot rot.

And it’s evident there are two ways of going about this. You may submit willingly, or you will be made to bow – but bow you will. God’s purposes are not mere proposals. As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 1:25: “The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

You can strive against that reality or you can step in rhythm with the current of His will. But either way, Isaiah 46:10 echoes loud and clear: “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.” God’s purposes are not suggestions. His will isn’t a group project. It’s a wave that will roll, crash, and roar over every kingdom, every counsel, every clever workaround.

The question isn’t whether God will prevail.

The question is: will you stand with Him – or stand in the way?

So before we pray, take a moment and reflect:

  • Where in your life have you been trusting your own strategy more than the Savior?

  • What decision, desire, or fear do you need to re-filter through the face of Christ?

Let’s pray.

Prayer: Spotlight Christ’s submission to the Father in Gethsemane as a model of perfect trust?
