Wisdom > Strength (Proverbs 21:22)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 21:22
A wise man scales the city of the mighty
and brings down the stronghold in which they trust.
We all build strongholds—careers, bodies, networks, intellect. None of these are evil; they’re good gifts. But when good things become our ultimate safety, they quietly become our saviors. That’s when strength turns brittle.
Proverbs says wisdom can “scale” the very places we trust most and show us what they can’t do. The market can’t love you back. The mirror can’t forgive you. The resumé can’t carry you through grief.
Wisdom doesn’t despise strength; it reorders it—putting God at the center so our gifts become instruments of love rather than measures of worth.
The New Testament calls Jesus “the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1) and says in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col 2:3). At the cross, what looked like weakness toppled our deepest fortress—self-salvation. He disarmed our idols and opened a better refuge (Col 2:15; Prov 18:10).
Questions for today:
Where do you instinctively run for safety—achievement, approval, control, aesthetics, insight?
What would it look like to relocate your trust—practically—into Christ? (Think: honest prayer before action, counsel before impulse, Sabbath before striving, generosity before self-padding.)
“The arm of flesh will fail,” but “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Isa 40:31). Not the end of strength—its redemption.
Let’s pray:
Lord, expose the places where we lean on ourselves. Teach us the wisdom that comes from above—pure, peaceable, open to reason. By Your cross, pull down our proud defenses, and by Your Spirit, make our strength serve Your love. Amen.
