Tend the Fire of Wisdom (Proverbs 19:8)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 19:8

Whoever gets sense loves his own soul;
he who keeps understanding will discover good.

In Week 13, we looked at Proverbs 4:5 – “Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.”

We were told clearly: GET wisdom. With all your getting – get it. Today, Proverbs 19:8 picks up that same tune.

But this verse adds something new. It says: Don’t just get wisdom. Keep it.

Get wisdom with all your getting. AND… keep wisdom with all your keeping.
That’s the message of Proverbs 19:8.

Getting wisdom is like striking a flame in the freezing cold – it takes effort, focus, and intention. But keeping wisdom? That’s tending the fire. You don’t walk away from it. You shield it, feed it, stay close to it – because it’s what keeps you warm and alive.

And doing this is how you love your own soul. Not in a surface-level, self-help kind of way. Loving your soul means choosing what will nourish and guard your deepest parts.
Wisdom does that. It leads you to what’s truly good.

So here’s the question:

  • Are you tending that fire?

  • With getting wisdom: what does that look like in your life right now? What would it look like to strike that flame?

  • With keeping wisdom: how are you tending the fire? Are you tending it and staying close to it – or drifting away from it?

Let’s pray the Lord would help us to both get and keep wisdom today.
