Life or Death (Proverbs 19:16)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 19:16
Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;
he who despises his ways will die.
This past week at my church we journeyed through Deuteronomy 30. That chapter is like standing at a crossroads with Moses as your guide. He lays it out in no uncertain terms: blessing on the path of obedience, curse on the path of rebellion. Life if you follow, death if you turn away.
By the time you reach the second half of the chapter, Moses is not meandering. He is thundering. He presents Israel with the starkest of frameworks: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live” (Deut. 30:19).
When I hear that, I can’t help but think of Proverbs 19:16:
“Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;
he who despises his ways will die.”
The Bible does not flatter us with a thousand gray options. It cuts the world in two: life or death. Obedience or rebellion. Christ or sin.
Now, many who stand outside the faith look at Christianity and shrug it off as nothing more than a suffocating list of rules. “Do this, don’t do that.” But they miss the heart of it entirely. God’s commands are not chains to bind us but wings to carry us. As John tells us, “His commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3). They are guardrails that keep us from plunging off the cliff. They are, as the psalmist sings, “boundary lines that have fallen in pleasant places” (Psalm 16:6).
Think of it: God gave His Word not to starve us but to feed us, not to hem us in but to set us free, not to kill our joy but to preserve it. To obey is to live. To despise His ways is to court death.
So the question presses in — why, then, do we so often abandon it? Why, like Israel, do we wander after idols? Why, like prodigals, do we leave our Father’s house for the pigsty?
The answer is as old as Eden: sin deceives us. It dresses up death in glitter and calls it life. The forbidden fruit always looks sweet — until the bite turns to poison in our mouths.
But here’s the greater truth: while God’s law offers life to the one who keeps it, not one of us has managed to keep it. We have all despised His ways. We have all chosen death.
Enter Christ. He is the greater Moses, the perfect Israelite, the true Law-Keeper. He walked the path of obedience without stumbling, and then — wonder of wonders — He took the curse for lawbreakers like us. The law says, “Keep and live.” The gospel says, “Christ has kept, now live in Him.”
So today the same choice lies before you: life or death.
But life is not found in your flawless obedience — it is found in Christ’s perfect obedience credited to you.
Death is not just physical decay — it is the eternal loss of God Himself.
Friend, you cannot cling to sin and have Christ. You cannot flirt with death and marry life. The fork in the road is before you.
Which way will you walk?
I love Moses and I love this verse here because the answer is made obvious. Choose life. Choose Christ. And why not? Choose now.
Let’s pray.
