Marriage as a Gift of Grace (Proverbs 18:22)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 18:22

He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the Lord.

Now, some of us hear that and immediately feel the tension. If you’re unmarried, does that mean you don’t have God’s favor? If you’re married but struggling, does that mean something’s wrong? No. What this verse is doing is reminding us that marriage — when it’s given — is never just the result of luck, or human effort, or chemistry.

It’s ultimately a gift of God’s grace.

It tells us that marriage is good, not because it makes life easier or more fun, but because in God’s design, it’s meant to be a place of covenant love, faithfulness, and growth. For the single person, this verse can still be a prayer — not a guarantee, but a way of saying, ‘Lord, if you provide this good gift, let it reflect your grace.’ And for the married person, it can be a reminder to see your spouse not as something you earned, but as a gift entrusted to you.

Even more though, it points beyond marriage itself. Because ultimately, the only spouse who can truly fulfill our longings and never fail us is Jesus — the Bridegroom who has found us, who has pursued us, and who calls us His own.

So the questions this morning are:

  • Do I view marriage (mine now or future hopes) as grace to steward—a gift meant to reflect Christ’s covenant love?

  • Where might I need to seek wisdom and community counsel—before marriage, in dating, or within marriage—to align my pursuit with God’s design?

Let’s pray that the Lord would align our hearts to see marriage the way He does, and to thank Him for the marriage of the Lamb.
