Refined by Fire: How God Purifies Your Heart (Proverbs 17:3)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 17:3

The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
and the Lord tests hearts.

You ever feel like life is turning up the heat on you? Maybe things keep going wrong, or you’re in a season where everything feels overwhelming and overbearing. If so, welcome to the Christian life! Sometimes the heat is turned up, and the heart is tried by God, but it’s all with purpose.

That’s what Proverbs 17:3 is all about. There’s a reason God uses the imagery of a furnace. E. M. Bounds once wrote:

‘It is in the fires of suffering that God purifies His saints and brings them to the highest things. It is in the furnace their faith is tested, their patience is tried, and they are developed in all those rich virtues which make up Christian character.’

That quote right there sums up this verse well. Just as a crucible refines silver and a furnace purifies gold, God does the same with us and our hearts. He strips away what’s impure, tests what’s real, and purifies our hearts.

Now there’s a scary part to this verse and a beautiful part.

First, the scary part. Look, let's be honest. This doesn’t sound fun. This verse doesn’t exactly generate a lot of enthusiasm in its readers. Silver melts at 1,761 degrees and gold at 1,945. That’s hot. And that means the Lord at one point or another will have to turn the heat up in your life to test the character of your heart and purify it. And turn it up to an uncomfortably high temperature. And He will.

But here’s the beautiful part – just as silver and gold are unfit for use until they’re purified by fire, so are our hearts. And thank God that He loves us enough to purify us. He doesn’t leave us as we are. He doesn’t ignore our impurities. He works on us – painful as it may be – because He knows the value of what He’s refining.

It reminds me of what Jesus says in John 15: He prunes the branches that bear fruit so they may bear more fruit. God’s pruning of our heart is His way of purifying it. It’s not punishment. It’s preparation to produce more fruit that glorifies Him.

It’s a verse like this one that makes me stop and do three things:

  1. Examine my own heart. If God is in the business of testing hearts, then I want Him to search mine. Are there areas where I resist His refining fire? Are there impurities He’s bringing to the surface?

  2. I’m led to praise God that He’s purifying me. It’s easy to resent trials and tribulation, but what if the suffering in your life isn’t neglect – it’s love? What if God is allowing the fire because He’s making you stronger?

And that leads me to #3…

  3. This all assures me that my present suffering or trial is not in vain. No suffering is wasted with God. Why? Because the Lord is going to use it and is using it to purify my heart. If you’re in the furnace right now, it’s not random. It’s not meaningless. God is using it to refine you, to shape you, and to prepare you for something greater.

And the wisest of Christians know there is no greater or harder work that can be done than that of purifying the heart. And only God can do it. And I’m glad He does it.

So with this in mind today, I want you to consider this:

First, how’s your heart? If your heart was in a furnace right now, what impurities might God be burning away?

Second, where in your life right now do you feel like the Lord is trying you by fire? And how are you responding, with fight or with faith?

Here’s the good news:

The same God who refines you is the same God who walks through the fire with you.

You are never alone in the furnace. He’s working all things for your good and His glory.

So let’s take this to Him in prayer.
