Silence—The Best Proof of Wisdom? (Proverbs 17:27–28)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 17:27-28
Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
Smooth operator… that’s what I think of initially when reading of the “cool spirit” presented here in these verses. Wise people have calm and cool spirits. They’re smooth operators. They’re unflappable. They know what to say, when to say it, and when not to say it – when not to say anything and keep quiet.
“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”
There’s a connection here – restraint and understanding go hand in hand. Wisdom doesn’t always come with a mic. Sometimes it walks in with a quiet, calm presence.
In a culture where volume often equals value, this is refreshingly different. The loudest voice doesn’t mean the wisest. Proverbs flips that script completely. Verse 28 says, “Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”
That verse reminds me a little of one of Abraham Lincoln's old sayings: “It is better to keep your mouth shut and let them think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”.
Amen to that.
There’s a reason Scripture says, “He leads me beside still waters.” Still waters run deep. Noise doesn’t equal depth. Silence, peace, calm – those things are often where God is found. And we don’t value them enough, especially the silence piece. We don’t sit in silence enough and just listen. I confess my days are filled with noise. My body has been trained by the world to always have something entering and exiting my ears – podcasts, conversations, music, distractions. It’s constant.
And even the calm, cool spirit – we don’t value and celebrate that enough either. Have you ever heard someone receive a compliment over having a “cool spirit”? I didn’t think so. Why?
Well, because we value other things. But Proverbs makes it clear today: Silence is wisdom. A cool spirit resides in a man of understanding. Who’s that? Someone who can restrain their words and their tongue. They are worth their weight in gold.
And here’s the beautiful thing – Jesus lived this Proverb perfectly. He stood silent before His accusers, restrained His words before Pilate, and carried a cool spirit all the way to the cross.
He didn’t defend Himself with a loud voice. He redeemed us through a quiet sacrifice.
So when we ask God to help us grow in this kind of wisdom… we’re asking to become more like Christ. And that’s what this is all about.
So where is God inviting you to say less, listen more, and be still with Him?
Let’s pray to be that someone today.
