Joy That Heals From the Inside Out (Proverbs 17:22)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 17:22
A joyful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
You know, this isn’t the first time Proverbs has tugged us into this theme.
If you remember a long while back we prayed through Proverbs 14:30:
“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.”
And the headline from that verse was this: what’s inside will always make its way out. Peace in the heart puts life in the limbs. Envy within will make the very bones ache.
And Solomon returns to the same truth here in Proverbs 17:22:
“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
Inside affects out.
The soul is the spring; the life is the stream. And the stream cannot run sweeter than its source.
I remember a conversation I had from years ago where someone told a friend of mine, almost wistfully, “I love your joy.” And they said it in such a way that came across like they could never have what this person had.
And that friend, bless them, simply said, “You can have it. You can have my joy.”
What a line.
Because joy in Christ is not a private stash. It’s not some rare personality trait or a limited-edition emotion that only the naturally cheerful or extroverted possess.
No — joy is like sunlight. You don’t lose any by sharing it.
And here’s the not-so-secret truth Solomon keeps pointing us toward: a joyful heart doesn’t grow out of circumstances any more than an oak tree grows out of a puddle.
Joy comes from an unchanging source — who we can see clearly in the New Testament is Christ Himself, the well that doesn’t run dry, the fountain that never freezes over.
Circumstances can hand you happiness the way weather hands you sunshine — occasionally and unpredictably. But Christ gives joy like an underground spring: steady, deep, and wonderfully stubborn.
So if today your bones feel dry… if your spirit feels crushed… maybe something with your family, maybe something within, whatever the cause, hear the gospel’s gentle thunder:
The Great Physician is still writing prescriptions in His own blood.
He can give you His joy — freely, fully, forever.
And when His joy enters the heart, it begins the holy work of healing everything downstream.
Let’s pray.
