Mercy Engages, Truth Fulfills (Proverbs 16:6)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 16:6
By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for,
and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.
I love Proverbs 16:6. I really do. I made a FRIDAY MOOD episode on this a while back because this verse is just so powerful. What makes it so powerful is that it holds two essential pieces of the Gospel in one sentence – God’s mercy that draws us in and His truth that leads us forward.
Proverbs 16:6 shows us that mercy engages, and truth fulfills.
In the first half of the verse, we see the mercy that engages…
"By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for…"
And who else does that point to other than the person of Jesus Christ? His love, His faithfulness, the grace He has given you and me by atoning for our sins on the cross. It’s mercy that doesn’t just exist – it moves toward us. It steps into our mess, meets us where we are, and draws us in.
But it doesn’t stop there. This mercy leads to the truth that fulfills – the second half of the verse:
"And by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil."
This echoes Psalm 130:4, which says:
"But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared."
It’s verses like this that remind us that grace and truth go hand in hand.
You see, grace without truth is just abused forgiveness. And truth without grace is self-righteousness.
Think of a car. Grace is the engine – it gets you moving. But truth is the steering wheel – it keeps you on the road. Without grace, you go nowhere. Without truth, you crash. You need both.
You need God's grace – His mercy that engages and cleanses your soul – and then you need His truth that fulfills, that you might go forth and live in reverence to Him, turning away from the evil you once lived in.
Mercy engages. Truth fulfills.
So in reflecting on this verse today, think of grace and truth:
Have you genuinely received God’s mercy – or just heard about it?
Do you lean too much on grace, ignoring truth? Or too much on truth, forgetting grace?
What would it look like to live fully in both today?
Let’s pray.
