Trusting God in the Uncertainty (Proverbs 16:33)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 16:33

The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the Lord.

This is such a great reminder of God’s sovereignty today. In ancient times, casting lots was like rolling dice or flipping a coin. From a human perspective, it looked and looks completely random. But Proverbs reminds us: what looks like chance to us is still within God’s wise and loving control.

That’s hard for us modern people. We live with so much uncertainty — a medical report, a layoff notice, a long wait for a text message — they can all turn our lives upside down. We call it luck, or fate, or coincidence. But the Bible says none of it is random. From God’s perspective, even the smallest roll of the dice fits into His purposes.

That doesn’t mean we’ll always see how. It doesn’t mean we’ll always know why. But it does mean that life isn’t ruled by chaos, or blind luck, or cruel fate. It means that underneath what looks like randomness, there is a Father who governs wisely. It’s a promise of security.

And nowhere is that clearer than at the cross. The arrest and crucifixion of Jesus looked like absolute chaos — betrayal, injustice, violence. From the outside it looked like the world was spinning out of control. But Acts 2:23 tells us Jesus was delivered up according to God’s set plan and foreknowledge. What looked like random cruelty was actually the most loving plan in history: God bringing salvation through His Son.

If God can work through that, then even in what feels uncertain in your life today, you can trust Him.

Let’s pray with that in mind today.
