The Cross Before the Crown (Proverbs 15:33)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 15:33
The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.
It’s halftime y’all. The day has finally come. It’s worth breaking the fourth-ish wall here because I have had this date and verse circled on my calendar for a hot minute. Today at 12PM marks the midway point of 2025, and this verse, Proverbs 15:33, marks the midway point of the book of Proverbs. It's a match made in heaven.
And I just love—L O V E—LOVE what the verse articulates.
The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.
The first half of this verse is a repetition of Proverbs 1:7, which we’ve infamously tabbed the ‘Principle’ of Proverbs. It’s the star player in the book—the Michael Jordan or Lebron James of Proverbs. And by God’s beautiful design He chooses to remind us of it, word for word, here again in the first half of the verse that marks the halfway point of Proverbs. It’s an intentional re-anchoring.
‘The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom’.
That’s a reminder of where we begin, endure, and finish with wisdom.
Wisdom comes only through a relationship with the Lord.
But notice the second half. It’s not just a new idea—it’s a progression on the aforementioned principle.
‘Humility comes before honor.’
See what’s happening? The first line is vertical; Our posture toward God. The second is horizontal — how that posture shapes our life. Together, they trace the arc of true wisdom: it starts in reverence and ends in humility.
And that’s where this verse confronts us. Because everything in our world says, “Assert yourself. Brand yourself. Elevate yourself.” But Proverbs whispers, “Humble yourself.. Bow first.”
The message here is simple. The way up is down. Before honor comes humility.
Without humility, honor is merely a temptation, not our glory.
And that’s not just principle, that’s a path. A path we see again and again through the pages of Scripture:
Joseph (from prison to throne)
Moses & David (from Shepherd's fold to Lord's inheritance)
Gideon (the 'least of families in Israel')
And of course Jesus! Philippians 2 says He "humbled Himself to death—even death on a cross." And because of that, God exalted Him. He bore the cross before wearing the crown.
That’s the way of the Kingdom: humility before honor. The cross before the crown.
That’s the path of our Lord—and the path we’re called to follow. In God's economy, the way up is always down. The way forward is surrender. Humility before honor. Cross before the crown.
So maybe today, at the midpoint of the year, the call isn’t to “rise and grind” but to kneel and trust.
To ask: Am I chasing honor, or am I choosing humility and letting God do the lifting?
Let’s sit with that. Let's take this repeated hinge-verse at the hinge-point of our year as an invitation:
Back to reverence.
Back to humility.
Back to Jesus.
Let’s pray.
