Radiant Faces, Refreshed Bones (Proverbs 15:30)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 15:30

The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes the bones.

This is poetry and power in one line – and it takes us straight to Jesus.

We know this verse to be true on a human level. Think of the first half:
“The light of the eyes rejoices the heart.”

Isn’t it true? Our eyes light up when they land on something or someone we love. Maybe it’s a person – a friend, a spouse, a child. Or maybe it’s something simple – a hobby you enjoy, a long-awaited gift, a beautiful view. Our eyes light up when they see beauty.

And the second line:
“Good news refreshes the bones.”

You’ve felt that before, haven’t you? A text from a friend that came at just the right time. News you didn’t expect – but desperately needed. It puts a spring in your step. It lifts the weight off your shoulders. That’s the feeling this verse is pointing to.

But here’s where the verse turns upward – and this is what makes it sing.

If our eyes light up at earthly beauty, how much more will they shine when they gaze on the beauty of Christ?

Psalm 34:5 says:
“Those who look to Him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.”

And if good news from a friend can refresh the bones, what can the good news of the gospel do? Will it not make dry bones dance?

This is the nature of the gospel. It’s not just beauty. It’s the ultimate beauty. It’s not just good news. It’s the ultimate good news.

It doesn’t just cheer us up. It lights us up. It changes us and it raises us from the dead.

So let’s pause and ask ourselves:

  • What’s been lighting up my eyes lately – true beauty or temporary distraction?

  • When’s the last time the gospel truly refreshed my bones?

Let’s pray.
