Does God Hear Me? (Proverbs 15:29)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 15:29

The Lord is far from the wicked,
but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

It’s hard to describe just how astonishing this verse really is. Think about it: the God who spoke the universe into being, who sustains galaxies and governs history – He hears you. Not vaguely. Personally. Attentively.

That should stun us. We’re used to being ignored – by institutions, by people, sometimes even by ourselves. Yet the most powerful being in existence turns His ear toward us. That’s the shock of divine attentiveness.

But there’s a tension in this verse too. It says God hears “the righteous” – but He is far from “the wicked.” That shows there’s some exclusivity here, and it raises a question: Where do I stand? Which am I?

And there’s also a huge problem there: if righteousness is the condition for being heard by God, and if we’re honest about our lives, our hearts, our failures – then we’re in trouble. Because none of us are righteous on our own.

But that’s where the gospel changes everything.

Jesus Christ was the truly righteous one – and yet He was cast off so that we, the unrighteous, could be brought near. On the cross, He lost the ear of the Father so that we could gain it.

He cried out and was not answered, so that we could pray and be heard.

That’s grace. That’s the solution.

And when that truth lands – when you realize that you, once far off, are now welcomed and heard – the only response is wonder. Gratitude. Joy.

You don’t have to strive to be noticed. You are already seen. Already loved. Already heard.

So today, let’s do the most countercultural, beautiful thing: let’s pray.
Because the God of the universe delights to hear from us.
