Short Fuse or Spirit-Filled? (Proverbs 15:18)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 15:18
A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,
but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.
This one hits close to home, doesn’t it? You don’t need to be a scholar to know what happens when tempers flare. Strife doesn’t need much to get started – just a spark. And a hot-tempered person? They walk around carrying matches.
But the second half of this verse is like a breath of fresh air: “He who is slow to anger quiets contention.” That’s not just advice – that’s the character of God. It reinforces a truth we saw yesterday in Proverbs 14:29: our salvation belongs in large part to the attribute of being slow to anger. God has not been and is not quick to explode. He’s not waiting to unleash. He’s patient. Kind. Measured.
It is the heart of God, and His slowness to anger, that is able to quiet the contention in our hearts. And only He can do it. He doesn’t stir up strife – He stills it. And the way He does it is through His patience. He doesn't just tolerate us – He draws near with gentleness. And thank God for that, because if He dealt with us according to our tempers and our tendencies, none of us would stand a chance.
James says it like this: “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James 1:19-20)
That kind of wisdom? It’s disarming. It’s powerful. It’s Christlike.
And that’s the invitation for us – to move from hot-headed to holy-hearted. From stirring up to settling down. Not just in the big moments, but in the everyday ones – traffic, toddlers, texts that annoy us.
The slow-to-anger life is a Spirit-led life.
So how’s your fuse been lately – short, or surrendered?
Where is Jesus inviting you to reflect His patience – to love like He loved you?
Let’s take these questions to the Lord in prayer – and ask Him to shape us into people who carry peace, not matches.
