The Story of My Life (Proverbs 14:9)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 14:9

Fools mock at the guilt offering,
but the upright enjoy acceptance.

The KJV of this verse starts out saying ‘fools mock at sin’... and don’t we see that in our world? In our country? In our communities?

So many people making a mockery of sin. It’s a joke to them. From TikToks that turn eternal fire into glittery flair, as if damnation were just another dance trend, to influencers who rebrand greed and lust as “living your truth,” to sitcoms where chastity or conviction is the punchline. We don’t just ignore guilt; we drape vice in velvet and call it virtue, giggling where once we wept.

But beneath the laughter lies a limp – a soul hobbling under shame, masking judgment with jest. There’s a fear of judgment, a wound from shame, or just the ache to feel free – maybe better said, to feel and be accepted – and in doing so, the fool ends up cutting themselves off from the very grace they need most.

The verse concludes: ‘but the upright enjoy acceptance.’

Isn’t that what we’re all craving? To be seen, known, and embraced? This verse says the upright enjoy that. Not just hope for it. They live in it.

The upright enjoy the very thing fools long to have. The very thing they long to be – the very thing we all long to be. Accepted. And this verse says only the upright enjoy it.

But that begs the question: Who is upright?

It feels hard for any of us to claim uprightness. Is it the sinless? No. Is it those who have never made a mockery of sin? No.

It’s those who have put their faith in the One who lived an upright life and died an unfair death, being rejected by the Father, so that we might be accepted in Him.

Catch that – Jesus bore the rejection our sin deserved, so we could receive the acceptance His righteousness earned.

The Son of God became the Man of Sorrows, so sinners could wear the robe of sons.

I can’t remember how this happened, but the other day I was playing minigolf with some friends and we got caught on the boyband One Direction. They have a song that’s called ‘Story of My Life,’ and I’m reminded of it now because I feel like it serves no greater application than this verse.

This verse for me is the story of my life. I once laughed at sin like it was a sitcom and wore rebellion like cologne. But Christ – blessed be His name – found me, broke me, and welcomed me. Now, I don’t just know about acceptance. I live in it. I breathe it. And it’s not because I’m upright, but because I’m in Christ – the only truly upright One.

So ask yourself today:

  • “Where have I made light of sin in my life?”

  • “Do I know the joy of being accepted – not for who I pretend to be, but in who Jesus is?”

Whatever reflection this stirred in you – whether it’s sorrow over sin, hunger for grace, or a deep longing to feel accepted – let’s pray over it all right now.
