What Are You Building On? (Proverbs 14:1)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 14:1
The wisest of women builds her house,
but folly with her own hands tears it down.
This proverb paints a vivid picture: a house going up, brick by brick — or coming apart, stone by stone. Wisdom builds. Folly destroys.
At first glance, it speaks of a woman in ancient Israel shaping her household. And in that world, the household was the center of life — family, economy, even worship. A wise woman could establish it; a foolish one could unravel it.
But the image reaches far beyond gender or culture. Every one of us is building something with our lives. Some are building families, others careers, reputations, or even ministries. The principle holds: wisdom patiently lays brick upon brick, while folly quietly pulls out the foundation stones.
And what is the true foundation? Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11: “No one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Friend, you can build on success, on pleasure, on reputation. You can craft something impressive, like a sandcastle that looks like a palace.
But when the tide comes in, only Christ stands.
To build on anything else is like polishing shutters while the house itself sinks into the swamp.
So the question Proverbs leaves us with is not, “Are you a woman, and how are you building your house?” but rather, “What are you building on, and how are you building?”
Are your days spent bricklaying in wisdom — or brick-throwing in folly?
Is your life a house with Christ as the cornerstone — or a tent flapping in the wind of your own desires?
Let’s pray for the wisdom that builds, and for the grace to build on nothing less than Christ.
