Only Jesus Satisfies (Proverbs 13:25)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 13:25
The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite,
but the belly of the wicked suffers want.
Every time I meditate on this verse, I think of a moment outside of class at UNC.
I had just walked out of my 8 AM marketing class, index cards in hand – Bible verses I’d written down to help me stay focused on the Word between classes. It was a habit I had: flip through them, chew on one, pray it back to God while weaving through the crowd on my way to the next thing.
That morning, a guy in my group project caught me mid-verse and asked, “Hey, what are you reading?”
I told him they were some Bible verses I was trying to memorize. He paused and then said, “Read me one.”
By God’s grace, the verse that came to mind – not even the top card in the stack – was this one. Proverbs 13:25. I shared it out loud to him. And I’ll never forget what he said next:
“Well... I think I’m pretty satisfied with my life.”
He meant it as a dismissal. But he got it. He so got it. He actually understood the verse.
This proverb is about satisfaction. It’s a contrast: the righteous have enough – they’re full. But the wicked? They live with a kind of soul-deep hunger that no amount of pleasure, success, or stuff can satisfy.
You can have a full schedule, a full bank account, even a full stomach – and still live empty.
That’s what this verse is saying.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God has put eternity in our hearts. That means every one of us – deep down – knows there’s more than this life. It’s why we keep striving – why we ask big questions – why some use the idea of the afterlife just to cope with what’s happening now. Simply, it’s why we spiritualize things… BECAUSE we’re spiritual beings!
We are hungry creatures. But only Jesus satisfies.
I think in that moment after class, my friend was confronted with where he found his fulfillment. And you know what? So am I every time I read this verse. So I’ll ask you:
Where are you seeking satisfaction and fulfillment right now?
Maybe it’s corny, but I’ll say this world and everything it has to offer is merely a snack in comparison to the feast found in Christ. In Him we have more than enough to satisfy our appetite, and like I said, only He can.
So let’s pray – and ask God to show us where we’ve been chasing things that leave us empty... and to draw us back to the only One who can truly satisfy.
