Listen to Live (Proverbs 13:1)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 13:1
A wise son hears his father's instruction,
but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
I’ve chosen to insert and pray through this verse to close our week after all the other Proverbs we’ve looked at because I feel like it summarizes and reinforces the theme of listening well, particularly with rebuke and correction.
‘A wise son hears his father's instruction,
but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.’
Now, with this verse, there are so many connections we could make to previous Proverbs, but I want to get straight at the heart of this verse.
A wise person listens to his father’s instruction. Kids, listen to your parents. And of course, children of the Most High, listen to your Father’s instruction. That’s the main thing I want you to hear and listen to from me today.
Listen to your Heavenly Father. Read His Word. Spend ample time in it.
Come to discern His voice by learning His character. Tune your ear and your eye to what is written and said, and do so over and over and over again.
And approach His Word with a humble heart. Let His Word convict and change you. Let it transform you. The scoffer does not let that happen. He does not listen to rebuke. He won’t consider the Words of Scripture because they challenge and convict his sinful ways. Don’t be that guy.
Be the one who is willing and eager to listen to God’s voice, letting His Spirit and His Word shape and transform you.
I feel like that right there sums up this week as a whole really well.
Listen and find life. Don’t and find death.
Let’s pray today that the Lord would give us hearts attuned to Him and ears that will listen to His voice. May we be the wise man – not the scoffer – of this verse.
