The Word(s) That Endure Forever (Proverbs 12:19)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 12:19

Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

There is lasting stability in what is true, fragility in what is not.

Why? Because truth shares in God’s reality. Lies are hollow; they collapse under the pressure of time.

Whenever Scripture talks about what endures “forever,” and uses that kind of eternal language, I’m drawn to Jesus. He is the Word who remains when everything else withers (Isa. 40:8; John 1). He says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” If his words endure, aligning our words with him isn’t moralism—it’s realism.

Now, someone might say, “But lies often work.” Sure…for a moment. A lie is borrowed time. You take credibility today and repay tomorrow with interest: anxiety, suspicion, isolation. It’s like a sugar rush—quick energy, long crash. Truth is different. It sometimes costs you immediately, but it compounds. It builds trust. It holds.

And let's not forget the One who is Truth faced a storm of lies and didn’t defend himself. He bore them to the cross and rose, proving that only what is true finally survives. That means you don’t have to keep the image machine running.

Grace lets you tell the truth because failure is no longer fatal. In Jesus, being known isn’t the end of you; it’s the beginning of you.

So today, practice one small act of durable speech: admit what you’ve hidden, correct what you exaggerated, or simply keep a promise. It may feel costly now, but you are investing in eternity’s currency. Truthful lips endure—not because we are strong—but because we belong to the One whose Word will never pass away.

So ask yourself today two questions:

  1. Where am I tempted to trade a truthful witness for quick wins / deceitful speech?

  2. How can I lace my speech with Scripture so it “endures”?

I don’t have much good to say, if anything, on my own. The more of His Word I share and speak, the better. I encourage you to sit in it like we have this morning.

Let’s pray.
