Pride Builds Walls, Humility Opens Doors (Proverbs 11:2)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.

Imagine a world where no one ever felt shame – where mistakes didn’t haunt us and regret wasn’t a thing. That was the world God made. But then pride entered the picture. First, in the heart of an angel who wanted to be greater than God. Then, in the hearts of Adam and Eve, when they trusted their own wisdom over God’s. And in that moment, something new entered the world – shame.

That’s the grandest example of disgrace following pride, and I know we all have felt and experienced that in our lives. Think about a time when pride led you down a path you wish you could erase. We all have that one thing from our past that still feels shameful to even think about. And you know what? In a sense, I think that can be a good thing because that feeling reminds us that pride separates. It distances us from others, from peace, and most importantly – from God.

But the good news is that in Christ, we don’t have to stay there. He bore that shame for us. And through humility, when we confess and repent, God draws near. He forgives us of all unrighteousness. He changes our hearts. He raises up all who are bowed down, and He tears down the proud.

That’s the simple equation here in Proverbs 11:2:

Pride builds walls. Humility opens doors.

Pride leads to separation from God, both in this age and the next. Humility leads to closeness with Him, both now and forever.

So where are you today?

  • Where are you building walls of pride, separating yourself from God?

  • And how can you seek to humble yourself this week before God?

Let’s pray.
