From Hollow Work to Holy Work (Proverbs 10:4)
Listen Here:
Proverbs 10:4
A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
Sometimes the Bible says something that sounds like common sense, and at first glance, this is one of those moments: “You reap what you sow.” Most people, whether religious or not, would nod along with that.
But let’s pause here. Proverbs is not making a simplistic promise that hard work always equals riches. We know that isn’t true — plenty of people labor tirelessly and still struggle to get by, while others seem to coast and yet prosper. The Bible itself warns that wealth can deceive and can vanish overnight.
So what is this verse saying? It’s describing the grain of reality. Neglect and half-heartedness eventually show. Diligence, integrity, and steady effort bear fruit — not always in money, but in the richness of character, relationships, and enduring substance.
And here’s the subtle twist: this “slack hand” isn’t someone who never works. It’s someone who looks busy but isn’t building anything real. Isn’t that striking for our age? Our calendars are crammed, our inboxes overflowing — and yet so much of it feels hollow, like simulated work without lasting impact.
Now here’s where Jesus enters. He said in John 5:17, “My Father is working… and I am working.” He is the perfectly diligent Son, who carried His labor all the way to the cross. And His work wasn’t to enrich Himself, but to rescue us. Because of Him, work is no longer futile striving. As Paul says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23). By the gospel, even thieves become laborers — not for selfish gain, but so they can give and bless others (Eph. 4:28).
In other words, Christ frees us from both laziness and the idolatry of wealth, and He redirects our hands toward love.
So let me ask you today:
Where are you tempted to simulate work rather than serve Christ wholeheartedly?
Let’s pray God would make us diligent in Him — not just busy, but fruitful, not just working, but working with love.
